March 1st 2009
March was a very slow month on tyre ramming as the Nepali workers had to leave to harvest their crops. Nonetheless, we have made our flush toilet and installed a hydroelectric system.

The cement work for the main two front windows is now in place. The window frames are being made by Neil from the UK. We are using seasoned teak wood for the window frames.

We have put a rope around the entire course so we can check that the whole wall is an even height throughout the course.

A happy Kirsten checks that the level is perfect!

Our local Indian Maisoner team take a tea break.

The first of our eucalyptus pillars. These felled naturally just near the site.

Leita and Preet demonstrating the first stage of tyre ramming.

The first test of our small hydroelectric system. Water levels are low so we are testing a 100W model. WE have nearly 30bar pressure which is pretty good. There isn't enough water to sustain the flow right now so we are ready and waiting for the rains.

We have used the same idea as described in the earthship book using tyres and a cement lid. We have dug a hole 8x8x8 feet and then filled it with tyres and soil right to the top. Probably you should use bigger tyres, we didn't have any to hand!
